    Journaling:
David and I had gone out on a date and when we came home, the kids were all excited about the kitty they had found and fed, and Kayla had named Coconut. Oh no! We had one cat at the time-Tiger. He was a sweet brown tabby. We had recently lost our beautiful gray kitty, Toulouse, and I wasn't ready to give my heart to another animal. I felt bad for this little kitten, but figured it belonged to someone because I never saw it. One evening, I think she got hungry enough to come out of hiding again. Well, I couldn't resist! But, she was feral and wouldn't let us get close. For almost a month, I would lay out a handful of food and back up with a trail leading toward me and the house. Finally, she got close enough for me to grab! I ran inside and set her in the laundry room. We didn't see her for a month! We knew she was okay because she was eating and using the litter box. After that month, she started creeping up the stairs carrying this little red stuffed animal in her mouth and crying. She would scurry back down and hide if she saw anyone around. A short time later, she started to follow me around the house during the day when the kids were at school. I think having Tiger around helped her acclimate. It took quite a while before she would get near the boys, but finally, they won her over. Not long after we had adopted her (and thankfully had her spayed), David and I had gone away for a weekend. Coconut was let outside. When we came home and realized she was gone, I was heartbroken. I figured we would never see her again, that the coyotes would get her. We left food out, hoping she would come home, but I don't know if she ate it or if the possums got it. One night, we came home and heard meowing...it sounded like Coconut! I called her and could tell she was close, but she was hiding again. It took all of us roaming through bushes to finally find her cowering. We were so excited! She was alive and healthy! However, somehow in her outdoor adventure, she lost the use of her left eye. We took her to the vet, but there was nothing they could do. She is our one-eyed-princess. To see her now, she is nothing like that cowering, feral kitty we adopted. She has such a sweet temperament. She purrs loudly when she's happy and can't resist a blanket covered lap!

This page is about my two favorite dogs... my dog, Doc, and our best friends' dog, Raider. Sadly, Raider was injured on the job and is no longer with us. Doc has missed him greatly!

    Journaling reads:
Nobody expected Raider, the “vicious” police dog to take to Doc so readily when we first got him. Raider wasn’t known for his tolerance of other dogs, since he was a working dog and not a pet. At home Raider was a big marshmallow, but not a fan of other dogs. Something about Doc was different though. Maybe it was because Doc was a puppy when they were first introduced, or maybe because Doc was so submissive. Whatever the reason, they were best buddies from the beginning. I’ve never seen two dogs play tug-of-war and fetch with eachother! Once in a while Raider would snarl and put Doc in his place if he got too brazen, but it never lasted more than a moment. They were best friends ‘till the end.

    Journal reads:
You were our first puppy dog. We named
you Pluto because of our love of Disney.
You were a black lab and doberman mix.
Your tail was never cropped, but probably
should have been. When you were excited
to see someone, your tail spun like a
propeller and hit us like a whip and
you sang too! You grew to be the biggest
lap dog we’ve ever known. We started
calling you "garbage dog" because you
always had your head in the garbage.
Your favorite toy was your rope toy.
Your favorite treat was baby carrots. You
loved to go for walks but you didn’t like
being on a leash. You were the best
watch dog, we always knew when there
was someone within 50 feet of the
house. You hated to get your feet wet!
You would walk around every puddle.
You weren’t allowed in our bed, but you
always managed to crawl one paw at a
time and wedge yourself in between us
undetected...all 88 pounds of you! Gone
too soon, we miss you buddy!

Through the past few weeks I’ve been sharing with everyone my amazing journey down the yellow brick road of life. I have shared my highs, and my lows, and everything in between. This week’s challenge really got me to thinking. I haven’t had a pet since 2008 when my husband and I got engaged. With the busyness of life we haven’t had a chance to adopt a new puppy; however as soon as our youngest is out of diapers we are planning on making that very special addition to our family. Looking back it's funny how life seems to work out just right. While my dog was getting older and sick she stayed by me until I had someone in my life that would stay by my side, my husband. She died about a month after we got engaged. I guess if I were to write a book this would be a prequel to the previous 3 weeks worth of stories.
    The Journaling Reads:

You were the dog that almost wasn’t. I remember the day my sister and I went and picked you out. You were the cute, little black dog amidst a litter of beige dogs. We brought you home let you run around and have fun, until dad came home. He was not as happy to see the small puppy running around the house. We have had dogs before and dad just didn’t want another one. It was a minor argument between my dad my sister and I, but in the long run my sister and I won, and the dog was there to stay. To make my dad feel he was part of it all we allowed him to name her, he chose “Rag-a Muffin” or ‘rags’ for short because she looked like a black dish rag. Although my sister and I thought we should call the dog “Pug-ugly”. She was so cute she was ugly with her face that looked like she ran face first into a wall.
Time went on and ‘Rags’ turned from a family dog to my dog. She was there for me after hard days at school, and while I wasn’t able to take her to college with me she was there whenever I came home on school breaks. She was a loyal, loving, and excitable dog till the very end. I was heartbroken when I heard she had passed away. My poor finance, (my now husband) was dog sitting for me while I was on vacation. He typically would call me a couple of times a day to see how things were going; I was a little caught off guard when he didn’t call me at all that morning. By the time the afternoon came up I decided to call him to see if he was okay, he told me he was just busy earlier and things were just fine. It was merely seconds after I got off the phone with him when my sister came into the cabin, tears running down her face. She told me the horrible news, my dog had passed away. The reason my husband never told me was he didn’t want to ruin my vacation, and he didn’t have time to call me that morning because he took the day off of work and drove over an hour to my parents’ house to bury ‘rags’ in the backyard.
We do plan on adding a dog to our family as we travel down the yellow brick road of life. My husband and I feel it is important to have a family pet, and when we do pick out our puppy I want to make sure it has the same wonderful personality as ‘rags’.

    Here we go.

    Journaling:

My sweet girls are mother (Cocoa) and daughter (Nutmeg). We got Nutmeg as a puppy. About 18 months later, we found out that Cocoa needed another home (she didn’t get along well with the other animals where she was). I wasn’t sure we needed a second dog. When we went to spend some time with her and make the decision (I was the lone holdout), she sucked up to me like she knew I had to give the final word. It worked, and she came home with us that day. To this day, she spends most evenings lying in her bed next to my desk area. Nutmeg likes to lay behind me in my chair and is annoying until you let her jump up and she loves to cuddle up with you to take a nap.

    Here is my layout

    Journaling reads:
From the moment we found out we were having a baby, Chestnut became so over-protective of Mama and her belly that we knew when you were born, you would be best buds! The day we brought you home from the hospital, Chestnut was very nervous around you. However it wasn’t that long before he accepted you as part of the family, licking your ears and your feet! Whenever you are laying on the ground, or any where he can reach, Chestnut is always licking you, giving you attention and love. For a while we were nervous about how much he was licking you, even asked the Vet about his obsession. But apparently Chestnut thinks you are his own puppy, one to care for and licking is his way of showing you his love and his affection. The love Chestnut has for you and the love you have for him is so indescribable even at this early age of your life!

Here's my entry. I tried to enter the journaling in the gallery, but it cut it off again.

Journalling reads: Even though you are technically Daddy’s since you were his Father’s Day present, you have definitely become quite the Momma’s Girl. I can’t get over how cute you are, especially when you give me your sweet little innocent look. Everyday I am so thankful we saw that sign along the highway that read “Miniature Schnauzers 4 Sale”. I love my sweet Gracie Jean with all my heart!

Please meet Kobi, our 2 year old Havanese pup and my furry friend! Journaling reads: Kobi, your name means ‘joy’ in Japanese and there couldn’t be a better name to fit your demeanor and the happiness you have brought us. We love your smiling face, jaunty walk, your crazy dog runs and tilt of the head as you listen to us. You have been perfect for us as we enter the retirement stage of our life as you bring many smiles and increased energy. We love you!

Here is my Clue version of our missing kitty:

LO inspired by Parker Brother's game Clue (original version)
Using Colie's Corner Solve a Murder, Connie Prince's Furry Friends Paper, and Wendy Tunison's Take Note
Main journaling: Serafina and Riley were so excited to get to adopt Oreo in November from a friend that runs a shelter. They kept him in their room and love him immensely. I assured them that cats could go outside because they come back. So, in March when Serafina let him in the backyard for a couple of hours, he disappeared. We searched and searched for him. He was no where to be found! Finally, 3 days later, we found his picture on the SPCA site. The girls were beside themselves with worry. It took 3 more days before we could get him out.
    Journal entries:
    Adoption Day 11/7/12
On March 14th, Oreo was released to the backyard at approximately 2:30 pm.
At 5 pm, called for him, with no answer.
Calls and light search of front and backyards continue that night.
Days 2 & 3 - search pattern widened to include parks and neighborhood.
Day 4 Missing cat signs made & SPCA website checked - Oreo's mugshot found. Drove to SPCA after school, to find SPCA closed on Mon!
Return Tues. am to identify Oreo, learn he needs to be neutered & microchipped first.
    Paid $115 up front.
Oreo released back home on March 20, 2013

    http://gallery.gingerscraps.net/show...d-whom&cat=795

    Who Rescued Whom?

We thought we were making your life better, but little did I know you would change my life forever. You were merely a baby found on the side of the road during a particularly cold autumn. At first, you were passed around a group of college friends, but they did not know how to take care of you. When we finally saw you, it was my cousin Crosby’s turn to try and take care of you. Something told me things were not right, especially hearing you were thought to be 6 weeks old. Crosby gave you to us, and I took you to the vet. The doctor informed us you were actually 4 weeks old. And since you had not received proper nutrition and love, the vet feared you would not live. If you were to live, he said you would never know how to take care of yourself having been without a mother. I was determined to defy the odds.

I spent two weeks nursing you with kitten formula. You ate as if starved. Night after night, I got up to feed and comfort you. Then one night there was not a sound. Our 8 year old Maine Coon male cat, Kitty, took you under his paw and became a surrogate parent. You learned to clean yourself and use the litter box. When we brought you back to the vet, he could not believe you were alive.

We knew you were meant to be ours when only a few months later Alan was diagnosed with cancer. It was all a blur; test results confirmed the cancer, he went into the hospital for a risky operation, more tests, a month of recovery and then we waited to know if the cancer was gone for good. As Alan sunk into a depression, I started losing my husband. He was distraught and exhausted. Every day I came home from work, he was in bed napping and you were always curled up by his side. You never left him throughout his recovery. To this day, Alan believes you helped him heal him. You saved his life.

This month marks the 5-year anniversary of you joining our family. My darling Kitten, we cannot imagine a life without you. At times you can drive us crazy with your antics, but we tend to laugh more than scold. Not a day goes by without you doing something over the top: You sleep in boxes, lie in wait behind the stairs to pounce on whoever walks by and you figured out how to open the box where the cough drops are kept because you like throwing them down the stairs. I know I have loved every minute and only hope there will be many more.
