One little 'tricky" I discovered with the kids as kids just click...IF choosing any of the selection tools: wand, lasso, marquee...the darn ants will not go away with ctrl d.
Instead, have the selection tool open, and right click : deselect all

If wanting to add a photo- Layer > open image as layer from the menu

I'm going to try and snag a few the kids do just exploring and share them. Rachel, I'm showing the kids your drawing tomorrow.
1st grade used: pencil, eraser, brush, change colors, and we get to 4 and 5th started them with layers too.
