Downloading from the store?

Hi ya'll...
Just a question, when I purchase from GS, it often gives me the chance to download the PSD file which I know is the layered file, but what is the PNG file? Do I need it if I download the PSD file? Thanks for your help in advance.

This is for templates most often - some people can not use the PSDs (because of the program they use to scrap with) and they can use the png layers instead (which is each layer saved individually).
