I sent them to all my great nieces and nephews last year (Non brand ones at $1.50 each not the real ones at $19.99 each!!). I have to add two more this year! lol

Last year was the first time I heard of the elf on the shelf. It's such a fun idea, I've decided to play along too, by making my own elf. Buddy is almost done! hehe

Francine - thanks for sharing that link! That story was hilarious!!!! LOL

Our Elves on the Shelf are coming on Dec 1. We have generic ones. ;) I am cost effective.... There is also going to be a boy and a girl. I thought it would be neat for the kids to be able to pass on their elves to their kids to keep the tradition going. ;)

We started the tradition this year on Thanksgiving. Aidan stayed overnight at a friends house and his friend had one and Aidan was absolutely amazed. Well as soon as I opened up the box Alex my 7 year old touched the elf's head and oh my gosh Aidan who is 9 years old had a total meltdown, because you are not suppose to touch the elf or he loses his magic so like I said Aidan was on the floor crying and absolutely hysterical. So I told him that we hadn't officially adopted him yet so it would be fine but he wouldn't take that for an answer so I had to google what to do if your elf is touched and how to get the magic back. So it said to sprinkle some cinnamon which is like a vitamin and he would get his magic back. I had a friend mention to me to use a cinnamon stick then it will always be there lol. Alex I think could care less about the elf but Aidan is a true believer. The boys named him Leo.

I hope this photo doesn't offend anybody ;)

We dont have an elf because we dont celebrate Santa, so it defeats the purpose of an elf telling Santa whether the kids are good or bad. But my oldest has a bear that she has humanized. When she's naughty, she blames him that he made her do it. While she was at camp, she left her bear at home (for the first time, he goes everywhere with her). When we picked her up, I told her how naughty the bear was, even taking photos of him being naughty like brushing his teeth with her toothbrush, all the way to playing with some of her other toys. She loved hearing the stories and has asked if her bear will be doing naughty things this Christmas. She wants him to, I just haven't done it yet, get a candycane with a string attached, fishing for goldfish in the toilet. I have the goldfish, just not the candycanes!! Everyone knows its Mama who does this stuff with her bear, but the girls are always suggesting ideas and its so much fun!!

Every year, probably for the last four years, we've talked about getting an elf, but since he's seasonal and her bear is everyday, we might just keep her bear as long as he's "healthy" enough to continue the mischeif.

I took the following from this site:
http://www.elfontheshelf.com/AboutUs/TheTradition.aspx

The tradition begins when Santa sends his scout elves out to Elf Adoption Centers. Waiting for their families to bring them home, these patient elves hibernate until their family reads The Elf on the Shelf, gives their elf a very special name, and registers their adoption online. Once named, each scout elf will receive its Christmas magic and become a part of the family’s Christmas each and every year.

Excellent listeners and even better observers, these scout elves are the eyes and ears of Santa Claus. Although they cannot be touched, or else they may lose their magic, the elf will always listen and relay messages back to Santa. Taking in all the day-to-day activities around the house, no good deed goes unnoticed; these scout elves take their job seriously.

Each night, after the family goes to bed, the scout elf uses his magical Christmas powers to fly back to the North Pole. Once there, the elf will make his or her daily report to Santa and visit with elf friends where they will tell stories about their beloved families, play with the reindeer, and of course, sneak some of Mrs. Claus’ cookies!

Before the family awakes each morning, their special scout elf will fly back to their home from the North Pole. However, since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot! While some like to hide in the freezer (probably because it reminds them of the North Pole) and others prefer to sit on the fireplace mantle or hang from the chandelier, these elves love to play hide-and-seek with their families.

On Christmas Eve, the scout elf will listen for Santa’s bell and then fly back to the North Pole until the next season, wishing every girl and each boy a Christmas of peace and a year full of joy.

That's too funny because my DH and DS think so too!

When I was making mine, they both came in and asked "what the heck is that?" So I showed them pics on the web ...and that freaked them out even more!

...and thanks for liking my (not so creepy (I hope)) elf! :)

We used to have those elves as ornanments when we were kids, so I dont find them creepy. In fact my mom was talking to me this past week about how she could pull her antique elves out of the attic and use them instead of buying an Elf on the Shelf for her grandchildren.

First i have to DITTO and say i think elves r creepy (don't like yard gnomes or cupids either)

that being said i LOVE this tradition and wish i had a way to include it in my house. i would have a very very very naughty elf (ok not quite like the one photo LMAOOOOO but the prankster kind) today was the first time in the non digi world i heard of this (thanks for letting me know what they were talking about!!!!)

their elf decided during the night to put flour on the table and make a snow/flour angel with the sons name in it making it look like he did it! our Christmas traditions are all about practical jokes so this would have been AWESOME...(and i would have made my own and made it less creepy LOL)

We had ours last year for the first year - the first day my oldest (than 6) cried because he didnt watn him to be real and my daughter (than 4) ran up and touched him and he tipped off the shelf and totally freaked her out. It was pretty funny! But he just popped out today and my oldest said "I"m not afraid of him anymore Mom!" It was cute. I have all sorts of fun ideas for him to be doing - hopefully I remember to move him!!

To remember to move your elf I suggest an alarm on your "smart" phone :-) Thats the only way I seem to remember anything anymore! LOL!!

I wanted to do this with the kids, but we couldn't find one that would ship to the UK in time, so I had to get a bit insane lol. I used an online service to send a free text message to my phone from the elf. He told the kids that he had slipped on the ice at the North Pole and broke his leg so he wouldn't be able to visit them for Christmas, but once they gave him a name he would try his best to still make their Christmas magical. They decided to name him Candy Cane and had a lot of fun texting back and forth to my phone. Once he got his magic he told them to listen for sleigh bells when he did something magical for them. It was hilarious watching them when they heard sleigh bells playing on my phone (I downloaded an app lol) and received a message saying check the cupboards and they found Lego advent calendars in the kitchen cupboard :) although the oldest one shrieked so loud he woke up the baby lol. The best part was watching them when the next text said "seeing your reaction when you got your present really cheered me up" . The elf hasn't done anything today because we have been out shopping and decorated the tree but I have a few things planned for tomorrow while Hubby is at work. Hugs Crystal xx
